Adaptability (2025)

The Saudi Arabia Museum of Contemporary Art at Jax (SAMoCA@Jax), Riyadh

Riyadh, February 21, 2025, SPA — The Saudi Arabia Museum of Contemporary Art at Jax (SAMoCA@Jax) inaugurated Adaptability exhibition, inviting visitors on a journey of discovery and reflection on the enduring dialogue between humanity and the primal language of clay.

Curated by Samer Yamani, the exhibition brings a unique perspective to the exploration of human and material evolution. Adaptability tells the timeless story of clay, its birth and its transformation by the hands of the earliest humans, who shaped their world with it, using clay as a vital tool in their journey through life. Here began the tale of the human-clay shared characteristics: transformations and changes grant clay a fragile strength, a rebellious obedience, and an ability to evolve; the deeper life’s furrows cut, the more clay transforms—just as humans do in their eternal journey of adaptation.

Showcasing the works of 11 artists from five Arab countries (Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Lebanon, Morocco, Jordan), the exhibition takes visitors on a journey of discovery of the evolution of clay, from ancient techniques to cutting-edge artistic innovations and robotic-assisted craftsmanship.

Adaptability is more than a collection; it is a vivid mosaic of human ingenuity. From the time-honored touch of hand-molding to the precision of digital fabrication and robotic artistry, the diverse works on display are presented within an evocative scenography. This thoughtfully crafted environment reflects the intricate paths of life, guiding the viewer from moments of deep introspection to the expansive horizons of our shared human experience. Through the elemental language of clay, Adaptability promises an exploration of our shared journey of transformation, reflecting the enduring spirit of humanity.
