Crystalline I

Sculptures
Terracotta and ceramic
20,000 pieces of 6x4x4cm

2025

This artwork is an extension of my research project Metamorphosis, it is a volumetric adaptation of the method I developed during my PhD to generate an infinity of geometric shapes based on frequencies. It is a search for all the possibilities of rotation of a segmented line, based on arithmetic permutations, to generate all the possible shapes that can be assembled towards infinity.

The main artwork is composed of approximately 20,000 identical pieces of 6x4x4cm in terracotta, which, thanks to their rotation in space, fit together to form an organic geometric body, which reminds us of the way in which crystallizations are produced in nature.

Geometric language is a kind of semantic path, a universal, cosmic metalanguage.
Of all the arts, geometry is most present in Islamic architecture, which manifests itself to the world in a profoundly enigmatic way, with complex, apparently indecipherable geometries that seem to conceal some hidden knowledge, known as ‘sacred geometry’. An evident example is the Zelllige of the Alhambra palace, in which the 17 crystallographic groups are represented.

From this image arose the idea that led me to go beyond the conventional limits of the Zellige, freeing it from the walls, creating a kind of 360º Zellige that grows and holds itself up in space thanks to its own geometric structure, as if it were a mineral crystallization.
