Crystalline II
Terracotta
1,000 pieces of 5,5×7,5×7,5cm
2025
.
Crystalline II is a volumetric extension of my PhD research, Metamorphosis, adapting a method to generate infinite geometric shapes based on frequencies and arithmetic permutations. The piece comprises approximately 1,000 smoked terracotta components (7.5 \times 7.5 \times 5.5\text{cm}) that rotate to form an organic geometric body, echoing natural crystallization.
The work is crafted from local Tetouan Tefaline clay, manually extracted and hand-prepared, using a plaster mold derived from a 3D-printed design. The dried pieces are wood-fired, and the defining deep carbon-black finish is achieved through a meticulous, extended two-week, low-temperature smoke reduction process.
