From a distance, we perceive utility poles and brass coils connected by cables. As we move closer, we realize that these cables contain spikes simulating barbed wire, turning this connection into something unsettling.
The brass pieces simulate the coils used for the electrical cables that traverse our planet; the brass itself alludes to currency and, therefore, to capitalism. The cables transform from barbed wire into mosaics that connect the brass coils. In this work, as in many previous ones, I turn to mosaics inspired by Islamic art, referring to the current complexity of the image that mass media can create of an omnipresent global enemy. Here, the geometry of frequencies acts as a unifying element, combining them with the spikes that represent elements of separation.
This work also features an interactive component. Five of the nine brass pieces are equipped with contact microphones that capture the participant’s sound. Through effects pedals and amplifiers, this sound is transmitted to the other four coils, which function as speakers thanks to tactile transducers.
